. hands-on

This is an educational project aiming to engage future generations into customizing their own garments utilizing simplified traditional textiles techniques from ancient cultures.

Taught and demonstrated by masters from many places that have kept the techniques alive for millenia, these traditional techniques will be simplified for school-age children for them to work alongside their care-givers to create connection, start a practice and learn while sharing.

On a basic shape -a teeshirt, a tunic- available in two unisex sizes (S and L)that  is accompanied by the "kit": a set of original materials and detailed instructions on how to complete the piece as the wearer wants to, allowing for personal improvisation.

The instructions are furnished by masters of craft from many places around the world that have carried knowledge of techniques such as: Fabric dyeing, Embroidery, Stitching, Printing, Painting...

Hands-on aims principally to connect, first the children with their caregivers, then both of them with the traditions that have contributed to form the history of textile culture, and lastly with others and the world at large.

For some this may be a window into a new universe of craft, art and hands-on work, for other a seed planted for future interest in traditional and ancient ways of making.

Our old traditions are becoming extinct, it is up to the younger generations to care for them, to learn about where they come from and how the work is performed, which materials are used and how the people used those textile languages to communicate their stories.
